Fires nationwide have burned record-low acreage so far in 2023

Despite a devastating outbreak in Hawaii this summer, wildfires so far this year have burned fewer acres nationwide than at any point since 2000.

Over 38,000 fires have burned 1,916,284 acres since January, according to the National Interagency Fire Center, which records fires in the first eight months of each year. This is very much below the 10-year average of nearly five million.

Within the last 10 years, the number of fires has fluctuated. 2019 saw the fewest at just over 32,000, but they burned almost four million acres.

As of the center’s most recent report, there were 82 active fires across 16 states. These active fires have burned 638,633 acres or about a third of the total reported.
