Farewell celebrations for Jimmy Carter begin with tour around Georgia

Former President Jimmy Carter‘s casket emerged from Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia, on Saturday, set to begin his journey to Washington D.C., where he will lie in state.

Carter, the longest-lived United States president ever, died on Dec. 29 at the age of 100.

Less than a week after his death, his body traveled through his hometown of Plains, Georgia, with supporters and family trailing the hearse.

The funeral procession passed his longtime Plains home, where his wife is buried. Rosalynn Carter died in 2023 at the age of 96. Jimmy Carter will later join her in a private burial on Thursday.
