A sailor said he put his weatherbeaten sailboat up for sale for $1 to avoid incurring hefty fines and possible jail time after the boat washed ashore on a Florida beach, local outlet WESH 2 News reported.
Captain Allan Askar had departed St. Augustine on Florida’s northeast coast for the Dominican Republic when he encountered rough waters off the coast of Florida on Dec. 22, according to the outlet.
“The wind was pushing me downwind and the waves were building up and also going down, meaning I need to surf waves,” Askar said.
Askar exhausted himself fighting the waves for almost 16 hours. “I was pretty much fighting with all kinds of conditions, and my body was quite exhausted,” he told the outlet.
Askar dropped anchor and fell asleep. His 1977 sailboat drifted at the mercy of the waves and ran aground at New Smyrna Beach, becoming a curiosity for locals.
