At present, the border of Armenia goes all the way to Iran and both Armenia and Iran expect it to stay that way. But Azerbaijan claims a territory called “Nakhchivan” (highlighted in red above) which is southwest of Armenia, and is landlocked to-from Azerbaijan. In order for anyone in Azerbaijan to get to Nakhchivan, or vice-versa, they must travel briefly through Armenian or Iranian territory.
