McColl Mayor George Garner II of South Carolina died Tuesday in a head-on collision with a truck days after the town’s police force resigned, according to a coroner.
The 49-year-old mayor, who was recently re-elected, “was being pursued by a Marlboro County Deputy” at the time of the incident, J. Todd Hardee, Darlington County Coroner, said in a statement posted on Facebook. The coroner claimed that the deputy was pursuing Garner for the mayor’s own protection, not because he had violated any laws.
“I will make a ruling on the manner of this death in the coming days. Please keep this family, and the fine folks in our neighboring Marlboro County in your prayers,” Hardee said. The coroner added that his office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol’s Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (SCHP MAIT) were investigating the incident.
