Montana Voters Fire U.S. Senator Jon Tester

Montana Senator Jon Tester, who has publicly held office in the state since 1999, lost his reelection bid to Tim Sheehy this week. President Trump’s popularity in Montana forced Tester to run a campaign falsely portraying himself as a “moderate”. Senator Tester probably expected his strategy of running as a “moderate” to work in 2024, as Tester deployed a similar strategy in 2018 and won reelection by 3.1%. During the winter months of 2024, Tester’s strategy of portraying himself as a “moderate” was paying off as polling from Montana showed President Trump holding a commanding lead, while at the same time, Tester was holding between a 2-9% lead on his Republican opponent.
