Liberty Win First WNBA Championship In Franchise History, Deliver New York City First Basketball Title In 51 Years

There’s a lot of flash and dash around the New York Liberty with their branding and being in the Big Apple, but they’ve never had that WNBA championship beside their name — until now. The team won their first title in franchise history after taking out the Minnesota Lynx in a 67-62 overtime thriller Sunday night in the decisive Game 5 of the WNBA Finals. Liberty forward Jonquel Jones tallied 17 points on the stat sheet to lead the charge for New York, one of the original WNBA franchises. The Liberty have five Finals appearances in their history, suffering defeat in every one, including in the 2023 campaign. This time, however, they finally got over the hump, and now the Liberty can call themselves champions.
