Biden says ‘we’re close’ to Middle East ceasefire

President Joe Biden hinted Friday that a ceasefire deal in the Middle East could happen sooner rather than later.

“We’re much, much closer than we were three days ago,” Biden told reporters in the Oval Office. “I don’t want to jinx anything,” he added.

Biden said the deal is not done yet, but “we’re close.”

War has raged in Gaza since terrorist attacks last Oct. 7 led to the deaths of more than 1,200 people in Israel. Protesters calling for an end to hostilities have trailed Biden nearly everywhere he goes in the months since, and protests are expected at next week’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Biden has, in the past, announced and endorsed ceasefire terms, including on May 31. But that effort and those since have not yet materialized.
