The United States men’s national soccer team has qualified for the 2022 World Cup, and celebrations are in full swing.
The team only had to avoid a six-goal loss in order to punch its ticket to Qatar, and it achieved just that with a 2-0 loss to Costa Rica.
When it came to its chance to qualify, history was on the Americans’ side, as their last loss of six goals or more was against France in 1979.
On the other hand, they haven’t had much luck in Costa Rica. The team is 0-10-2 all time in World Cup qualifying matches in the country and lost 4-0 in the last qualifying cycle.
Here’s how social media reacted to Gregg Berhalter’s squad clinching its first World Cup berth since 2014:
It’s not how you qualify but just that you qualify. Congrats to the #USMNT on qualifying for the #FIFAWorldCup!!! 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
